Lack of road markings and sign boards near underpass raise safety concerns – Phuentshogling

The underpass near the NPPF colony in Phuentshogling which was constructed to ease traffic near the Phuentshogling town has served its purpose. However, according to the residents, it has now become an accident-prone zone. They said several accidents have occurred especially at the entry and exit points of the underpass constructed a few years ago.

This is the four-lane road connecting the roundabout near the old YDF building and the Phuentshogling-Rinchending highway.

Upon reaching the NPPF colony gate, the two-lane road then runs underground.

Without a proper road marking, the vehicles make inappropriate U-turns posing risks to other vehicles travelling along the way.

Residents said it is risky and several accidents occurred at that junction.

“There are four ways. The way towards the colony is also from here. We have seen several accidents occur here. One time, a scooter was hit by a Creta. The scooter was coming from the tunnel. The scooter driver was thrown away several meters away. They have made the road nicely but it is not convenient,” said Tshering Wangdi, a resident.

“The concrete walls on the two sides of the road entering the tunnels are quite high. We have seen and heard of several accidents here. The other end of the tunnel near the NPPF colony doesn’t have any proper signboards,” said Chedrup, another resident.

According to the Police, there were one or two cases of accidents in this area.

Police said they are working with the Thromde to install the signboards soon.
