To bring more opportunities and create skilled workforce, a training programme is currently underway at the Rural Development Training Centre in Zhemgang. The initiative is equipping out-of-school youth and support staff of various district administrations with valuable skills. They are trained in food processing, value addition and strategies for better market access, thereby creating a better future prospect.

From making watermelon ice cream to processing local pickles and candies, the group of youth and support staff are engaged in various food processing techniques.

They were also taught packaging, implementing quality control measures and utilizing modern technologies.

Although some of the participants are from Zhemgang, others came all the way from Haa, Chhukha, Paro, Lhuentse, Sarpang, Monggar, Thimphu and Trashi Yangtse to attend the training.

“We have learned how to process 40 different types of food products. Moreover, we have gained knowledge and skills on how to preserve the food items for a longer duration,” said Kinga Dorji, a participant.

“I cannot afford to start a business on a large scale but I am planning to start a small business after the training,” said Rinchen Pema, another participant.

“From the training, I have learnt how to make chips, candies, paneer and sweets,” said Nima Jashar, who is also a participant.

Apart from the practical sessions, the participants also learnt about book keeping.

According to the officials from Rural Development Training Centre, the participants are expected to start small businesses after the training. Officials said this will help create a skilled workforce and contribute to economic development.

The Rural Development Training Centre in Zhemgang with support from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development organised the month-long training which will end tomorrow.
