Attorney General Lungten Dubgyur has submitted his voluntary resignation to the Prime Minister’s Office. It was submitted yesterday. The resignation comes amidst claims of collusion within the Judiciary involving a drug smuggling and possession case. The Judiciary suspended two judges last week for deliberate miscarriage of justice.

The Prime Minister had asked the Attorney General to submit an explanation since a news release stated that the Attorney General had gone on a trek with the father of a defendant and one of the justices after which a reversed judgment was passed.

According to the Office of the Attorney General Act of Bhutan 2015, an Attorney General can resign by submitting a written resignation to the Druk Gyalpo through the Prime Minister, with a month’s notice. The authority to accept the resignation shall be vested with the Druk Gyalpo.

The Anti-Corruption Commission said they have no comments, and the police told BBS that they did not receive any complaints regarding the case.

Meanwhile, the father of the defendant who works as a Dzongkha editor at Kuensel said he does not have any comments.
