Six bodies recovered in Oong-gar flash flood in Lhuentse

A flash flood in Oong-gar Chiwog in Maedtsho Gewog in Lhuentse washed away 23 people. Six bodies have been recovered so far while the search is still underway. The flash flood that occurred at around 7:30 PM yesterday washed away a De-suup base camp and Druk Green Power Corporation’s camps. His Royal Highness Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck visited the Oong-gar flash flood site today. The Prime Minister and DGPC Managing Director also visited the site.

Of the 23 people, one was a Desuup and five were DGPC staff. The rest were the family members of the staff.

The officials were working for the Yungichhu Hydropower Project.

The flash flood washed away machines of DGPC and vehicles belonging to the staff. The flash flood also buried 10 cattle and paddy fields of Oong-gar village.

According to the officials, the cause of flash flood has not been ascertained.
