In Trongsa, the construction of the first artificial turf football ground in the district is almost 90 per cent complete. However, the district does not have a budget for the main component of the ground, the artificial turf. There is also no budget allocated for the installation of a floodlight facility.

The new football ground is being constructed at the Sherubling Higher Secondary School.

The initial contract for the construction works was terminated over slow work progress. Today works like the development of gallery, and seats for spectators are ongoing. These works are expected to complete this month.

However, the district has yet to decide on the Nu 24 M required for laying of the artificial turf and installing the floodlight facility.

“We have budget estimates for laying of artificial turf and lighting. But we do not have a budget source for the same. However, we are in touch with the Bhutan Olympic Committee regarding finances for the artificial turf. We have also discussed about the possibility of using money from the district annual budget for the floodlights,” said Tharchen, Chief Engineer.

The new ground when ready, will not just serve the purpose of a football ground but will be used for other purposes as well.

“In Trongsa, having such a ground would really benefit as there are no grounds with such facilities anywhere in the district. It is not only for sports but national and district-level programmes will be hosted at the ground. It will have immense benefit,” added Tharchen.

Although without a dedicated budget to complete the construction works, once ready, the facility will be managed by the district administration and will be made accessible to all. The entire project is estimated to cost about Nu 60 M.
