Taraythang Primary School which was once on the verge of closing due to limited or no enrolment is now facing a shortage of teachers. The issue surfaced last year after the school started receiving more students with the coming up of the Gyalsung Academy Project and the relocation of Dorjitse and Woongchhiloo villages near the Taraythang Gewog office.

Taraythang Primary School has 97 students studying in classes PP to VI. The school has only six teachers.

One of the classes has to remain without a teacher while the teachers take classes for the other six sections. This has left the parents worried about their children missing out on building a strong foundation for learning.

“It would be beneficial if they provide additional teachers. There aren’t enough teachers here and that would affect our children’s learning,” said Sunil rai, a parent.

The matter was also raised during the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu. The Taraythang Gup proposed additional teachers for Taraythang Primary School.

“People of Taraythang are fortunate to have the Gyalsung Academy Project in our community. Staff working on the project have started enrolling their children at the Taraythang Primary School. Moreover, two chiwogs of Dorjitse and Woongchiloo that were previously located in remote places are now relocated nearby the gewog office and the residents have now started enrolling their children in our school,” said Dhan Man Gurung, Tareythang Gup.

The Deputy Chief District Education Officer said they are aware of the teacher shortage at Taraythang Primary School. He informed the house that they will soon receive five new teachers of which one will be deployed at the Taraythang Primary School.

“We have the Gyalsung Academy Project coming up which will soon commence work. As a result, the population of children will keep on increasing every year.  Right now, we have a shortage of teachers. But very soon, we will receive five to six new teachers. We have planned to send one of the teachers to Taraythang Primary School upon their arrival,” said Kuenga, the Deputy Chief District Education Officer.

Taraythang Primary school was established in 2010.
