If you are a building owner and have yet to paint the roof of the building, you better speed up. The Thimphu Thromde will penalise owners and institutions beginning this month if the roofs are not painted. Thromde will impose a penalty of Nu 50,000.
At the moment, while most building owners have completed the painting works, some are still in the process of painting their roofs.
For residential and commercial buildings, the roof should be painted green while the government and institutional buildings’ roofs will be red. According to the Thromde, the initiative is for beautification and classification.
“Regarding the penalty and site inspection, in January month we are carrying out a channel site inspection and observing the progress. We will review the details and after that, action will be taken accordingly,” said Teknath Kararia, Structural Engineer of Thimphu Thromde.
But there is an exception when it comes to buildings under renovation, temporary structures, single-storey houses, new constructions and those wishing to add more storeys to their buildings.
Thromde officials said they have received proposals from some government and public institutions requesting for consideration.
“Based on their request, some are considered. But we will not entertain those cases where the building owners have cited the reason like labour shortage, cold season or a lack of budget. This is because this announcement was made around five to six months ago so, there is adequate time to plan it and do it,” added the Structural Engineer of Thimphu Thromde.
It is not known how many building owners have painted their roofs. But as per a few of the roof painting service providers BBS talked to, they have painted roofs of more than 100 buildings so far.
They used a spray machine and charged a minimum of Nu 5,000.
