With more than 80 per cent of the construction works completed as of today, the construction of the Paro District Court is not only progressing well but is expected to complete a month ahead of the schedule in March this year. The construction began two years ago. The Austrian Development Cooperation is funding the project worth nearly Nu 48 M.
Despite the pandemic, the three-storied district court is gradually taking form with most of the works completed as of today.
Close to 30 skilled workers are executing the final touches such as flooring, plumbing and electrical works. The new district court will be earthquake resilient and disabled-friendly unlike in the past.
“We faced challenges to procure raw materials during the lockdown amid the pandemic. However, the work is on track and even ahead of schedule.
According to our work plan, we are supposed to finish by March, which is a month ahead of the deadline. The exterior works are almost complete and for the interiors, we are doing the final touches,” said Pema Choki, the Site Supervisor of the project.
Presently, the district court is located in Rinpung Dzong and it provides judicial services from the two benches.
The courtroom is cramped and doesn’t have separate detention rooms for men, women and children. The court received more than 800 cases last year.
