If  Bhutan Kuen-Ngyam Party gets to form the government after the 2013 elections, the party will offer ministerial portfolio to the then Opposition Leader. In a press conference today, the party’s spokesperson, Sonam Tobgay, said they will offer ministerial portfolio to the Opposition Leader only if the Constitution permits.

“As far as Bhutan Kuen-Ngyam Party is concerned, the Opposition Leader will be the member of cabinet, so that we will have more transparency, more accountability and be more mindful of what we are doing,” said Sonam Tobgay.  He said having the Opposition Leader in the cabinet will allow check and balance at the doorstep.

The Constitution neither explicitly allows nor denies such move. “The Constitution seems quite broad. It could be subject to debate and interpretation,” said the party’s spokesperson.

Bhutan Kuen-Ngyam Party is one of the six political parties aspiring to contest in the upcoming elections in 2013. The party has identified 29 candidates as of now. They will register as a political party with the Election Commission in October this year.

It has set up eight offices in Wangduephodrang, Trashigang, Trongsa, Monggar, Samtse, Thimphu, Samdrup Jongkar and Tsirang.
