Today marks the 76th Independence Day of India. To observe the day, the Indian community here in the capital congregated at the Indian Embassy, India House Estate.
August 15 is the day that marks the end of British rule in 1947 and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation.
On this occasion, the Indian Embassy in Thimphu wore a festive look. India’s tricolour national flag fluttered in a summer breeze.
The Indian Ambassador to Bhutan hoisted the national flag. Following this, the Indian Ambassador, Sudhakar Dalela, read out the Indian president’s address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.
“At the beginning of civilisation, saints and seers of this land had developed a vision of humanity that was defined by equality of all, indeed, the oneness of all. The great freedom struggle and its leaders like Mahatma Gandhi re-discovered our ancient values for modern times. Then, it is no wonder our democracy has Indian characteristics. Gandhiji advocated decentralisation and power to the people.”
On behalf of Bhutan, Gyalpoi Zimpoen presented Tashi Khadhar to the Indian Ambassador. Senior government officials and other Indian dignitaries were in attendance at the celebration.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation with special emphasis on respect for women, which is an important pillar of India’s growth.
Bhutan and India share a close friendship, which dates back to the visit of first Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Bhutan in 1958.
It was a historic visit- one that would forever seal a special friendship that would span generations, between the two countries.
The diplomatic relations between Bhutan and India were established in 1968 with the opening of a special office of India in Thimphu. India is Bhutan’s largest development partner.
