The Bar Council of Bhutan has cancelled the license of a legal firm in Gelephu for deceptive practice. Kartshi Legal Firm’s license was revoked yesterday after it was discovered that it was being used by another person. It was found that the actual license holder is currently in prison.

The case came to light after the Animal Life-saving Association or the Tshethar Tshogpa filed a complaint against their Regional Coordinator and his legal representative Tashi Tobgay for charging excessive legal fees.

They alleged that the two men had claimed huge legal fees of Nu 217,000 for preparing legal documents for the Association.

Upon investigation, the Council found that Tashi Tobgay was not the real CEO of Kartshi Legal firm as he had claimed.

The Council also found that they had used money receipts of another legal firm whose owner was out of the country. The Council stated that the duo used these receipts on 24 occasions as per evidence.

According to the Bar Council, the use of another firm’s money receipts by Tashi Tobgay is a deceptive practice.

The Council stated that the Association can report the act of Tashi Tobgay to the relevant agency for further investigation.
