Electric vehicles (EVs) first hit the Bhutanese roads in 2014. Since then the government has been pushing the transport sector in the country to use electric cars to save energy and curb emissions. But, the lack of charging stations can be a major setback for its fleet to increase in the country.
Kezang Jamtsho, 33, is a taxi driver based in Nganglam in Pema Gatshel. He replaced his fossil fuel taxi with an electric taxi in May this year. He is the first taxi driver in Nganglam to operate an electric taxi.
However, the unavailability of charging stations for electric cars in Nganglam is what bothers him.
“Nganglam is the connecting point to six eastern districts. So, the electric vehicles travelling from here are challenged by the lack of charging stations,” said Kezang Jamtsho.
Like him, some other taxi drivers said lack of charging points can hinder effective taxi services to their customers. According to them, at least two charging stations need to be established in Pema Gatshel.
“It would be of great help if one charging station is opened in the district and another one here in the dungkhag. Otherwise, only one charging station will not be of much help. Those planning long journeys will be affected the most,” shared another taxi driver in Nganglam, Pelden.
Currently, Kezang Jamtsho uses a home charger, set up outside his house to charge his electric taxi. However, the downside of this charger is it is time-consuming.
“If it is a local trip within Nganglam, it’s fine while charging with a home charger. But if I have to drop my passenger to a faraway place, then it is impossible. My car’s battery will be fully exhausted then. So, if one charging station is opened here in Nganglam, it would be very convenient,” he added.
Nonetheless, he may not have to face such problems soon. The Road Safety and Transport Authority will set up a charging station each in 14 districts including Pema Gatshel.
As of now, Thimphu, Paro, Chhukha, Wangdue Phodrang, Punakha and Haa have electric vehicle charging stations.
