As the country slowly returns to normalcy, businesses are also gradually picking up. And so are the sawmill businesses in Zhemgang. The sawmills which remained closed for the last two years are now back to business and are receiving an increasing demand for timbers.
These days, the workers are busy sawing the logs into planks. The sawmills are now fully operational with an increasing demand for timber from the construction sector and furniture houses. There are two sawmills in the district.
According to Sangay Dorji, a sawmill owner, the pandemic has affected his business like any other business. He expects the business to now pick up.
“My sawmill had been closed for the last two years. And now with the relaxations, the construction sector is picking up which is helping our business,” said Sonam Wangdi, a sawmill owner.
However, according to the owners, they are facing a skilled labour shortage.
“When the business is picking up, we need labourers. And I am facing a labour shortage,” said Sangay Dorji.
Meanwhile, to reduce the manual workloads, the sawmill owners plan to replace the old machines.
