It has been almost a decade since the plan to construct Sunkosh Hydropower Project in Dagana was discussed. However, even today, the government doesn’t have a definitive timeline for the implementation of the project. The National Council recommended the government provide a definitive timeline while discussing the Budget Appropriation Bill 2022-2023 last week. However, the National Assembly during the re-deliberation of the Bill today didn’t support the recommendation.

“People should not wait for the project. They can grow cash crops such as areca nut. I asked the Dzongkhag administration that they should not keep any activities on halt. Even if the project comes through, it will take some six to seven years to make the agreement. So, people should not wait for the project. The implementation of the project will take time and we cannot give a definitive timeline for the implementation,” said Loknath Sharma, Economic Affairs Minister.
