With no proper shed for the past two years, the local vegetable vendors in Paro town have been struggling to sell vegetables. But their inconveniences will soon come to an end. The construction of a two-storied shed is ongoing and is scheduled to complete in November this year.

The temporary shed is located at Tshongdue archery range. With vendors rushing for a good spot, some end up setting up their stalls near the entrance. And this has caused inconveniences to both the vendors and the customers.

“If we don’t come early then we lose out on a good spot to sell our vegetables. Moreover, it is inconvenient when it rains,” said Phub Tshering, a vegetable vendor.

“If we show up late, we will have to set up our stall at the corner of the temporary shed. And it’s inconvenient when it rains as we do not have roofs to protect us,” said Sonam Pem, another vegetable vendor.

“Local vegetable sellers like us are often chased away from the gate. This, they say is because our vegetables are fresh and people return from the entrance after buying from us,” said Dema, a vegetable vendor.

The construction of the new shed began in 2020. Once complete, it is expected to accommodate more than a hundred vendors.

“Once the new shed is complete then we will be able to sit comfortably and sell our goods. We need not bother about the weather,” said Dema, a vegetable vendor.

“If the vegetable shed that is located in the town is complete, it will be convenient. We can immediately buy vegetables and leave. Currently, it is inconvenient as the shed is located next to the roundabout and the zebra crossing is right next to it,” said Tshering Gyeltshen, a customer.

The old vegetable shed in the town was dismantled as it was small with no storage facilities.

The new vegetable shed is being constructed at a cost of Nu 24.58 M.
