The Office of the Attorney General on Monday submitted an appeal to the Zhemgang District Court for a longer sentence for Sangay Gyeltshen who attempted to rape a nine-year-old child.
The Panbang Dungkhag Court earlier this month sentenced 36-year-old Sangay Gyeltshen to five and a half years in prison, along with 35-year-old Neten Wangchuk who was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Neten Wangchuk, the stepfather of the girl was found guilty of raping the child. According to the OAG, since any attempt of statutory rape is a third-degree felony, the sentencing range is from five to nine years.
Officials said, the child is very small and therefore the convict should be given the highest sentence of nine years.
