Delayed urban road development project already benefiting residents- Monggar

Monggar town will soon have a better road network. The urban road development project which includes road widening and blacktopping works in the periphery of the town is in full swing today. Construction of walls, drains and laying of base course have been completed so far. The project is expected to complete by the end of this month.

Currently, blacktopping works are ongoing along the stretch between Jarungkhashor and Trailing areas.

The Monggar District Administration awarded the road widening and the blacktopping works on about four kilometres of the road in the town to a private construction company in June 2020.

The project was supposed to complete by the end of January this year. But it was delayed due to the pandemic.

According to Choden, the Project Manager of Issup Construction, the blacktopping works will be complete by the next week. He said that extra work which is not a part of the contract package and the collapse of a retention wall at Trailing last year affected the entire work progress.

“We have not faced any difficulty while executing the work at the Jarungkhashor area. But we had to replace a few Hume pipes along the stretch between the milk processing centre and the workshop area. So, such extra work has slowed the progress,” he added.

Meanwhile, the residents around Kadam Goenpa and Monggar Higher Secondary School have already started reaping the benefit of better road infrastructure as the widening and blacktopping works in the area were completed.

“Initially, the road was bumpy making it difficult for small cars to drive on. Even people visiting Kadam Goenpa faced inconveniences. Now we are so grateful for the better road which is convenient for both heavy and small cars. Moreover, school-going children can also walk safely,” said Tshethrim Zangmo, a resident of Kadam in Monggar Gewog.

Once the blacktopping work is complete, frequent motor vehicle accidents between Trailing and Jarung Khashor area are also likely to reduce.

“With the completion of the road widening work, we are hopeful that there will be fewer car accidents. The commuters and the residents won’t face dust problems as well. The contractor and dzongkhag have been executing the blacktopping work swiftly and we are happy to see good progress these days,” said Sonam Dorji, a resident of Jarungkhashor in Monggar.

The urban road development project is being executed at a cost of about Nu 67 M.
