Most boys from broken families or economically disadvantaged parents join monastic schools. While it is considered the best option, they are deprived of the chance to formal education. However, Nalanda Buddhist Institute in Punakha is an exception. Monks in Nalanda get a formal education from a school nearby, just like any regular student.
