The Wangdue Phodrang District Court sentenced five people including two women to more than one year to nine years in prison for drug trafficking and battery on Monday. And they cannot pay in lieu of prison terms. Police say they are repeat offenders.

On June 23 this year, police arrested two men aged 33 and 34 following a battery case from Bajo town. Since they were under the influence, a urine test was conducted. Both tested positive for Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus or SP Plus.

Upon investigation, police also seized 255 capsules of SP Plus from the house of the 33-year-old convict on the night of June 26. His girlfriend, a 25-year-old woman who lived with the convict also tested positive for SP Plus.

The 33-year-old convict was found guilty of battery and drug trafficking. He was sentenced to a concurrent prison term of five years. His girlfriend was also handed down a five-year prison term for drug trafficking.

The 34-year-old convict was sentenced to a prison term of one year and two months for battery since he was also convicted in the past for a similar case.

Another 25-year-old man from Sarpang was arrested during the investigation. According to the judgment, he had sent three boxes of SP Plus capsules from Thimphu to the convict’s girlfriend. He was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug trafficking.

And the last convict is a 38-year-old woman from Wangdue Phodrang. She had paid Nu 31,500 to the 33-year-old convict through his girlfriend to bring the capsules. The woman was found guilty of solicitation and sentenced to a prison term of two and a half years.

The office of the Attorney General forwarded the case to the Wangdue Phodrang District court on 26th August 2021.
