Open apparel design competition sees ten clothing designers

To identify and promote potential Bhutanese designers, an open apparel design competition was held in Thimphu today. The exhibition was held around the theme “The Buddhism Thread that ties India and Bhutan”. It was organized by the Indian Embassy in partnership with the Bhutan Fashion Consortium.

Ten clothing designers from across the country participated in the event. The first prize was won by the dress designed by Sonam Choden. The winner will get to intern for five days at the renowned Fashion Design Council of India in New Delhi. It will be fully funded by the Indian Embassy.

“We are happy that through this modest effort, we are able to support and assist you. Through this little effort and this collaboration between the Embassy and Fashion Design Council of India and Bhutan Fashion Consortium, we very much hope that the winner of this competition would have a memorable and very productive stay in India,” said Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Ruchira Kamboj.

The winning designer will get to learn the latest designs and couture trends prevalent in the Indian and international fashion arena and also learn directly from top designers at the FDCI.

“Just providing training to the youth is not enough. If we provide platforms like today, youth will get motivated and their training won’t go to waste,” said Kencho Wangmo, the Founder of Bhutan Fashion Consortium.

Participants worked on their designs for almost a month. Cash prizes were also awarded to the three next best apparels.
