The Phuentshogling Thromde plans to improve the town’s public transport service as it took over the management of city buses from Bhutan Post recently. According to the Thrompon, the office will introduce new routes and add more buses to the existing fleet.
Today, the four city buses in the town are in a poor condition. This discourages many residents from using the service.
“The existing buses are old and people hesitate to use them. They complain that the buses wobble and rainwater leaks inside,” said Tashi Norbu, one of the city bus drivers.
“To console the passengers, we tell them that new buses will arrive soon.”
Besides, the service covers only Pasakha, Pekarzhing, and Kabreytar.
Karma Wangmo lives in one of the extended Thromde areas which is about eight kilometres away from the town.
“An efficient city bus service would benefit us a lot. Today, we have to wait for long to catch a taxi till the town.”
Thrompon Uttar Kumar Rai said the Thromde plans to start city bus service in the town’s extended areas such as Pipaldhara and Dhamdhara once their roads are blacktopped.
Besides, the Thromde will soon propose for eight new buses to the government.
“Considering the narrow roads in the extended areas, coaster buses would be the best option for efficient service delivery,” the Thrompon added.
