As the Taliban takes over Afghanistan, many countries are evacuating their citizens to safety. According to sources, there are still three Bhutanese in Afghanistan. They are working for the United Nations and are reported to be safe.

Sources say two of them are airlifted to the US Military Airport in Kabul from the Hamid Karzi International Airport in Kabul. They will leave for the UN’s office in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Wednesday. The other one is currently in the UN compound in Kabul and he will leave for New York only in September.

A total of seven Bhutanese work in Afghanistan for the UN. However, four of them returned to Bhutan in July on a vacation. They are still in the country.

After the foreign forces started pulling out of Afghanistan in May this year, the Taliban started taking over cities.  The day after the Tabilan seized control over Afghanistan, fears intensified about a return to the Taliban’s brutal rule.  Thousands of Afghans flooded Kabul’s international airport, swarming around a departing U.S. military plane as it taxied down the runway.

The war between the Afghan’s Military and the Taliban has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
