One thing that has been constantly growing over the years in Darla Gewog under Chhukha Dzongkhag is the Farmer’s Cooperatives. From dairy to poultry farming, people are forming cooperatives after it proved to be more economical and profitable.

Lal Bahadhur Raika started a poultry farm in 2007. Though his business fetched him a considerable income, marketing his produce still remained a challenge. But, after he joined poultry farming cooperative in his village in 2010, his marketing problem has been solved. “Now, all I have to do is collect the eggs, store it and wait for the cooperative’s vehicle to pick it up,” he said.

Every day, he collects about 1,200 trays of eggs which, along with the eggs from other members are supplied to the western region of the country. He earns a minimum of Nu.10, 000 a month.

Likewise, a dairy farming cooperative started about a year ago in Rinchentse village has also benefitted the villagers.

Every morning Hasta Powdyel collects milk from 17 households registered with the Cooperative. He collects about 80 to 150 litres a day which is sold to the residents of the locality and Gedu town. He earns about Nu.800 to 1200 a day. He said compared to the initials month, the profit margin has improved.

Meanwhile, other than poultry and dairy cooperatives, the gewog is also seeing an increasing number of vegetable farming cooperatives.
