Bamboo products are widely used in the construction industry. At the moment Bhutan imports bamboo from India. But the trend is likely to change in a few years as the Renewal Natural Resources Centre in Bhur, Gelephu is carrying out research on commercial plantation of bamboo. It has been conducting research on 13 different kinds of bamboo since 2006. It has also planted bamboo saplings in the community forest and lands that are not cultivable.

Once the research is over, the centre plans to distribute the best bamboo saplings to the people. It also has plans to carry out awareness programme among the people on the management of naturally grown bamboo. The initiative is expected to enhance the income of people and the socio economic development of the country.
