A 12-year-old girl from Wangphu Gewog In Samdrup Jongkhar gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday. According to sources, the girl kept her pregnancy a secret and delivered the baby at home at around 9:30 PM. The girl is a student in one of the schools in the gewog. Her parents and teachers were also not aware of the pregnancy until the last moment.

According to sources, the parents and the girl took the baby to the Wangphu BHU after the health of the baby deteriorated. The BHU reported the case to the Gewog Administration and then the Police were informed about it. Following which a 35-year-old man, who is a neighbour of the girl, was arrested yesterday. The man is suspected of raping the girl.

Both the girl and the baby are in stable condition. According to school management, they give awareness of early teenage pregnancy and other related issues annually and the girl was known to be actively engaged in school activities.
