Villagers of Philooma Pam in Orong Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar will soon be getting adequate drinking water. Under the government’s Water Flagship Programme, the Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag Administration plans to provide a new source of water supply for the villagers by June this year.
Currently, 28 households of Philooma Pam are facing a shortage of drinking water. Today, some water taps in the village are running dry. The current water source at Khardeyri is small and not sufficient to supply enough water for the villagers. The villagers resorted to storing the little water running in their taps.
Karma, a farmer in Orong Gewog said, “I store the little amount of water I get and use it for drinking and washing purpose. It is hard for us to maintain cleanliness without water.”
“The water running in our taps isn’t enough for drinking, washing and other purposes. I am storing the water in containers,” added Choni Zangmo.
The issue is expected to be solved soon. Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag Administration has identified a new water source at Gromnori and allocated around Nu 640,000 under the water flagship program to supply enough water for the villagers.
“The dzongkhag administration has plans to provide a new source of water supply to Philooma Pam under the flagship programme. All works are to be complete by June this year,” said Orong Gup Jigme.
The dzongkhag administration will be providing materials and technical support for the project and villagers will be contributing labour.
As of today, the dzongkhag administration has procured and reached the water pipes at the site. Villagers are planning to start the work at the earliest.
