For most people with disabilities, sport is a far-fetched dream. However, it is not an impossible dream. UgyenRabtenWangchuk, a student with mobility impairment studying in Gangrithang Primary School in Bumthang is a living example. The 9-year-old is a huge football enthusiast and he recently took part in Bhutan Football Federation’s Grassroots Course. His enthusiasm was there for all to see.
Born with physical impairment disabilities, Ugyen has difficulties moving both the right leg and hand. However, this has not stopped him from playing football. He gives it all, be it in training or matches. His determination speaks volumes about his dream. He says he wants to be a football player he grows up.
“Though I have problems with my limbs, I can run and compete with other children. When I played with other children during the course, I could play as good as them. That way I think I am a lucky person despite my physical disability,” he said.
Ugyen is a self-motivated child. His personality and attitude have impressed his instructor.
“He likes studying as well as playing sports. We only need to teach the techniques and skills once or twice, he picks them up quickly. When it’s time to try something new, he will be the first to step forward. Though he has difficulties moving his right limbs, I think he plays better than other children,” said Kezang Lhamo, the Sports Instructor in Ugyen’s school.
Currently, there is no sports academy in the country for children with disabilities. But the Bhutan Football Federation’s Grassroots Courses tries to bring onboard children from all walks of life to have a go at the sport.
“For now we don’t have any specialised coaching or courses for them but we are trying to involve them as much as possible so that they get an equal opportunity to be happy, express themselves on the field and have fun with this beautiful game,” said Galey Zangpo, the Head of the Grassroots Football, Bhutan Football Federation.
Fun is exactly what Ugyen is having with the game and with his passion; he could have the world at his feet in the future.
