Transporting cash crops will no longer be a concern for the people of Choongshing village under Jigme Chhoeling Gewog in Sarpang. All thanks to the newly constructed motorable bridge over Rong river in 2019.

Without a motorable bridge, people of Choonghsing village had to manually carry their oranges and cardamoms on their back to take them to the nearby market area in the past. But not anymore, as people of Choongshing village in Sarpang district are now using vehicles to transport their products. Oranges and cardamoms are one of the main cash crops for the people of Choongshing village.

“It is not like in the past. With the construction of the bridge complete, transporting mandarin oranges has become much easier and convenient now,” said Harka Badhur Bandray.

“With the construction of the bridge, many vehicles have started passing by our village and this has helped us immensely in transporting our goods. But in the past, the situation was different as we did not have a motorable bridge here. We had to carry our goods on our back and it was a laborious task. And during mandarin harvest season, we even had to use horses to transport our goods,” said Santi Ram Pokol, another resident from the village.

Moreover, the construction of the bridge has also helped in the transportation of construction materials.

“The road has reached every household in the village. And now we have a motorable bridge connecting our village to another village. This has made the transportation of construction materials like cement and stones much easier for us,” said Damber Singh Acharya.

The 180-feet-long bridge was constructed by the district administration. It has a carrying capacity of 24 metric tons.
