The Government of India handed over a cheque of more than Nu 17 M to the Royal Civil Service Commission as the release fund for the Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarship at the Indian Embassy today. Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Ruchira Kamboj handed over the cheque to the Chairperson of the Royal Civil Service Commission.

Instituted on 19th June 2009, the Nehru-Wangchuck Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship programme that provides nine scholarships every year for Bhutan’s best and brightest to study in premier Indian institutes.

Over 100 Bhutanese have been awarded this scholarship till date.

Meanwhile, two Bhutanese youth are due to complete the 1st semester of M. Tech (Control & Automation) and M. Tech (Computer Science & Engineering) through online classes and digital channels in December 2020. They are the recipients of the new India-Bhutan Friendship Scholarships introduced in February 2020 for Bhutanese youth to pursue M. Tech programmes at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. These new scholarships were introduced by the Prime Minister of India on the occasion of the 40th birth anniversary celebrations of His Majesty The King on 21 February 2020.

According to a press release from the Indian Embassy in Thimphu, the India-Bhutan Friendship Scholarship is a unique gesture on the part of the Government of India and IIT, Kanpur that will pave the way for Bhutanese students to receive the best education in engineering and technology from one of the top-ranked higher education institutions across the globe.
