GDP grew by over 2 percent in 2019 compared to 2018

Bhutan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by over 2 per cent last year as compared to 2018. However, economic growth is expected to plunge into negative in 2020 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. GDP is the total value of goods produced and services provided in a country over a year.

As per the National Statistics Bureau, from 3.06 per cent in 2018, the country’s GDP growth was recorded at 5.46 per cent last year.

The Service Sector recorded the highest growth at 9.16 per cent in 2019 followed by Secondary Sector and Primary Sector at 2.01 per cent and 1.30 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, the Gross National Income of the economy grew at 5.38 per cent which is an increase of 2.68 per cent from 2018.

With a population of over 700,000, the GDP per capita was recorded at more than Nu 240,000 which is an increase of Nu 12,400 from the previous year.
