Joining other world leaders at the United Nations Leaders Event for Nature and People yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering pledged to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 by continuing to walk on a sustainable path. Prime Minister said Bhutan has always been guided by the farsighted conservation vision of Kings because of which biodiversity and natural heritage are pristine and intact.

“Our Kings have set a very high standard for us. We have pledged to remain carbon neutral at all times to come and keep at least 60 per cent of the country under forest coverage. As of today, we have about 72 per cent of the country under forest coverage and most of it is protected by law as either national parks, biological corridors or wildlife sanctuaries. We know it is not easy in the 21st century, but despite all the challenges, we pledge to remain on this sustainable path. That is why I am a big fan of this global pledge of more nature by 2030. I am convinced that through this pledge, we are on the path to achieving the 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature. Let us all put our hearts together to protect and help heal this planet before it’s too late. We all know that we owe this to our children,” Lyonchhen said.

The world leaders endorsed the pledge to take urgent action over the next ten years to put nature and biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030.
