In view of the nationwide lockdown, the Health Ministry approved a protocol for availing essential health services during lockdowns. According to the ministry, the protocol will be applied during all lockdowns irrespective of the magnitude.

And, people availing themselves of such services must follow strict preventive measures such as wearing a face mask, physical distancing and washing hands frequently.

As per the approved protocol, a health worker or a frontline worker will deliver medicines to people with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis and mental health conditions. At the same time, the health ministry advises people with such illnesses to keep a minimum of one month stock of medicines at all times. The patients can also visit a hospital for consistent reviews and services in private cars or request for transportation facilities and must carry one’s prescription or a health book.

Similarly, routine immunisation for children is encouraged to reduce vulnerability against vaccine-preventable diseases and avail essentials health services from identified focal points across the country.

Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering shared about the protocol during the press brief yesterday. “If a pregnant woman wants to visit the hospital for delivery or for a routine check-up, and if she has the MCH handbook, she will be allowed to move. They cannot miss routine checkups. Whether they travel in a taxi or private car or in their neighbour’s vehicle, if they have the MCH card they are allowed to move. And also people going for routine immunisation for children will be permitted,” said Lyonchhen.

Also, to prevent unintended pregnancies and complications related to it, appropriate contraceptives will be available in Basic Health Units and through Essentials Health Service Focal numbers.

Meanwhile, beginning today, the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu arranged teleconsultation services for new health issues. The General Out-Patient Department will facilitate the service available from 9 AM till 5 PM. Doctors will make an assessment of the patient’s condition based on which, a medical prescription will be provided and directed to the pharmacy or the emergency department.
