After more than a decade, Trongsa town experienced snowfall yesterday. The locals consider this as a good omen forecasting a promising yield and a period with lesser disease outbreaks and natural calamities.

The snowfall, which started at about 9.00 am in the morning, lasted for around two hours. However, it was not heavy enough to settle.

For those living in the higher altitudes of the district, receiving snowfall at this time is normal. But for the town residents, as much as it was a moment to treasure, the weather pattern had them reflecting. Some felt it was an impact of climate change while those optimistic regarded it as a good sign.

“Trongsa is located between mountains. And there is an old saying here that when snow falls in the two opposite mountains and it meets in between, there will be no diseases or natural calamities in the region. The yield of crops will be better too,” said Sonam Yeshey, the Secretary for Trongsa-Bumthang Rabdhey.

“Normally, areas of Tashipokto and Dorji Goenpa would receive snowfall. But this time, after more than a decade, it fell in the town area. We hope it is a good omen,” hopes Nado, from Trongsa.

“The last snowfall we experienced here was in 2005 or 2006. But this time, even places such as Ueling, Sherabling, Kewathang, Loushong and the town received snowfall,” added Karma Lethro, the Trongsa Thromde Representative.

Meanwhile, Yotongla, along the east-west highway, experienced a heavy snowfall which led to a roadblock. However, the highway was opened to traffic from this morning.
