The Bhutanese national football players will receive an additional salary amount of Nu 20,000 each from March this year. Coinciding with the Birthday of His Majesty The King, Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) and the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to financially support the national football players today.

With the signing of the memorandum, 30 National Football players will receive an additional incentive of Nu 20,000 each. Currently, national players get only Nu 10,000 as a monthly salary from the Bhutan Football Federation.

“This decision is not the decision of the DHI but it is the command that we received from His Majesty The King. His Majesty commanded as the symbol of unity of the country, His Majesty will support anything that promotes national unity. And his command is that football has managed to do that,” said Dasho Karma Yezer Raydi, the CEO of DHI.

Delighted with the news, some of the current national players claimed this will further develop football in the country.

“This will immensely benefit the upcoming players and football enthusiasts in the coming years. We did not have any players making their life out of sports but now with such support from the government we will be able to develop football in the country and be able to earn bread through football,”  said Chencho Gyeltshen, a National Player.

“Many of the players left football due to family pressure stating that football will not help them earn bread. We only used to earn around Nu 1,700 per month during those days. I have seen many of the best players giving up on football and focusing on their studies,” added Tshering Dorji, also a National Player.

Meanwhile, the BFF also unveiled its new official Bhutan national team jersey.

Freewill Sports Private Limited, NIVIA will be the official kit sponsor for a period of three years starting from this year. Previously, FBT Company from Thailand served as the official kit sponsor for BFF.
