Four Thromdes will receive 28 compactor trucks by the end of 2021 for solid waste management. The Gross National Happiness Commission (GNHC) and Environment  Management Team of JICA finalised Grant Aid project worth Nu 600 M yesterday.

Thimphu will receive 17 compactor trucks while Phuntsholing, Gelephu and Samdrupjongkhar will receive five, four and two trucks respectively.

Thimphu Thromde will also receive three container carriers and 24 containers. Thimphu produces the highest amount of wastes. In 2018, the dzongkhag produced 62.2 tonnes of wastes and it is likely to increase to 70.4 tonnes in 2023.

The Chief Environment Officer of Thimphu Thromde, Yeshi Wangdi said that with new trucks, the thromde will be able to provide the timely waste collection services. At present, due to frequent breakdown of the garbage trucks, they are not able to provide the timely services.

Today Thimphu Thromde alone has 14 compactor trucks of which, 12 are outsourced to Clean city and Greener way.

The landfill management vehicles like backhoe loaders and excavators will also be provided to help in managing the landfill in Memelakha.
