The 11th Border District Coordination Meeting between Bhutan and the State Government of Assam is underway in Thimphu. At the meeting, the two sides agreed to support each other in strengthening security measures along the border.

Both sides also agreed to cooperate in countering cross-border trafficking and smuggling of pharmaceutical drugs, cannabis and to intensify patrolling by security and forestry personnel among others.

The meeting, which was instituted in 1994, has been instrumental in promoting and strengthening the age-old ties of friendship and goodwill existing between the two countries as well as resolve issues of mutual concern on a timely basis.

According to the press release, with the porous border between the two countries, some criminal activities are bound to take place and encounter a few issues related to cross border management and, law and order. The press release states that there have been no major issues in the border areas because of this mechanism through which the issues are being resolved on a daily basis as well as adopt timely measures to facilitate maintenance of peace along the border areas.

The two-day annual meet will end tomorrow.
