The ongoing access primary road network construction at Jigmiling Industrial Estate was damaged due to the heavy rainfall on June 24th. The cost of the damages was estimated at around Nu. 4 M.

Nawang builder is carrying out the access primary road network construction of 9 km road of which 3.6 km is horizontal road and 5.4 km, a vertical road network. Due to heavy shower on 16th of June, out of five vertical roads lane, three-road lanes were damaged. All the damaged road lanes were restored and around 80% of their work was completed except for blacktopping work. However, the night long heavy rainfall on 24th has again washed away almost 50% of the road network.

“We restored the damaged work of panel 1.2 and 3 and reached to the top on 24th but on the same night, it was washed away. Only about 20 per cent of the work was left, why I am saying 20 per cent is that all the works are mechanized with the deployment of machines, we were supposed to complete the work within one to two months with blacktopping but again we have to start our work from scratch,” said Nawang Dorji, the contractor.

The Contractor said that concern agency should construct storm drainage system before awarding such kind of work in this type of area because the collection of rainwater volume become so big with continuous heavy shower and make it difficult to control its way from making to the construction site in absence of proper stormwater drainage system in the area. The contractor said that he is going to stop the work until the end of the summer season and resume its work in winter.

“We put up a letter to concern agency for the requirement of the storm drainage system on June 20th. Within the span of 4 days, this incident occurred before they could take action,” he added.

The collection of rainwater outlet from Industrial area along the Gelegphu- Sarpang highway has damaged some portion of highway road recently. There is a high possibility of affecting the road in the coming days if immediate measure is not taken. Jimiling Industrial Estate is located at around 12 km away from Gelegphu town and has an area of 700 acres.
