Two Bridges, one in Khoma and another in Gorgan under Lhuentse Dzongkhag were inaugurated on Thursday. More than 700 households of the two Gewogs and nearby areas will be benefitted. The Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Pavan K Varma inaugurated the bridges.
The bridges were built as part ofthe Small Development Project funded by the Government of India.
Speaking at the function, the Indian Ambassador said there are more than 2,000 small projects that the Indian government has committed throughout the country.
He said the project was a success and that India’s contribution and commitment has not gone into waste. “This bridge is made of steel, cements and sand but its significance is much more. It signifies the good relation that Bhutan and India shares. I see the bridge as bringing Bhutan and India close,” said the Ambassador, adding that it strengthens Bhutan-India relationship, making India’s commitment to the welfare, prosperity and well-being of Bhutan.
Both the bridges are 200 feet long and have the carrying capacity of 24 metric tonnes.“I have crossed the Kurichu River number of times, today I cross it with a difference. I cross it with higher pride and greater happiness,” said Dzongda Tshering Kezang.
Some of the villagers expressed their happiness for providing them with such facilities.
“We thank the Indian government. All the 8 Gewogs of Lheuntse will be benefitted,” said one of the villagers.
Another said: “I have been working as a messenger for 17 years and I had to cross the river through wooden bridges for all those years. But now we have a proper bridge. It will benefit us a lot.”
Members of the parliament, local leadersand people of Khoma, Gangzur, Gorgan and Metsho Gewogs attended the inauguration ceremony.
