To promote livestock production, a cattle show was organised at Dophoogchen under Dorokha Dungkhag, for the farmers of three Gewogs in Samtse. The farmers of Doongtoed, Denchukha and Dhophoogchen Gewogs entirely depend on livestock for their livelihood.
Around 500 cattle were brought from the three Gewogs to participate in the event. The show was divided into various categories- local cow, Jersey, and cross cow.
Some of the farmers said, the event was educative and useful. “Cattle show event has never been organised in our community before. I hope to rear more number of jersey breed cattle in future and inform my friends, the benefit of rearing the high breed cattle,” says elated Lakshman Adikhari.
“I came to know the type of cattle that needs to be raised and how to take care of them. I also learned the sort of vaccines required to prevent fatalities in cattle production,” said Cheten.
Addressing the gathering, the Dorokha Dungpa, Kinzang Thinley, stressed upon the importance of improved breeds. “People should be thankful to our government for taking pains in organizing such kind of event in our place for our benefit.”
According to the Dzongkhag Livestock Officer, the event was mainly organised to educate the farmers on pasture development, livestock management and livestock diseases.
“It is to educate the farmers on the importance of improving their cattle breeds which would be a great step towards realising the national goal of achieving food self-sufficiency,” he added.
Local people and students of Dorokha attended the event. The day ended with the distribution of prizes for the best cattle.
