Thimphu police arrested two former monks after a video clip showing one of them allegedly involved in lewd and lascivious conduct during a religious ritual went viral.

They were arrested on February 20 when the suspect came to the police to report about the video after a public outrage on social media.

According to the police, the incident happened in Changzamtog in Thimphu earlier this week.

In a 30 seconds clip, the main suspect the 36-year-old former monk can be seen touching women inappropriately during a ritual.  The video is filmed by another 26-year-old former monk at the ceremony.

After the video clip went viral on social media, many condemn the act and raised concerns on the conduct.

According to the police, sharing such video in social media is becoming rampant in the society and the numbers of arrest are increasing gradually. Police urge the public to use social media responsibly.

According to the Penal Code of Bhutan, a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of lewd and lascivious conduct, if the defendant performs a sexual act in public under circumstances where the defendant knows it may be observed by the public and that causes the public affront or alarms; or sells, manufactures, issues, distributes, displays or otherwise deals in a obscene material.
