Every household in Ketokha village in Bongo Gewog, Chhukha now has a toilet each. The Rotary Club of Thimphu helped build the toilets, which were inaugurated yesterday.

Some 34 toilets with bathrooms attached were built within a month’s time, while 25 were built in July last year.

“Before, when we did not have toilet, we practiced open defecation,” Namgay Om from Ketokha said. “Diseases like fever, diarrhea and others became less common after the toilets were constructed.”

“We thank the Rotary Club for the support,” Sangay Dorji said. “It’s been a life changing experience having toilet and bathroom. We no longer have to go to the forest or bathe in open.”

The Gewog Health Assistant, Sangay Tenzin, hopes the toilets would help improve health and hygiene in the village.

“Now that there are toilets in every household, I am expecting there will be fewer illnesses,” he said.

“In Bongo village, when there were no toilets, the number of sick people reached 79 at one point. After toilets were constructed, the number dropped to 28. Having toilet makes a huge difference in terms of maintaining health and hygiene.”

The Rotary Club of Huskvarna in Sweden is the major donor. It contributed close to Nu 1.5 M for the construction of toilets in Ketokha.
