New water supply system for Kanglung Gewog

Most of the villages in Kanglung Gewog, Trashigang are grappling with drinking water shortage. Officials blame the shortage on the growing population and inefficient water management practices.

Kanglung Gup Kinzang Dorji said some people waste water resulting in shortage in the community.

“People living in the upper areas waste water. As a result, those in the lower areas are left without enough water.  In each village, there are about five households without proper water supply,” the Gup added.

The water shortage is, however, expected to end soon as a new water supply system is being constructed.

Water reservoirs are being built and pipes are being laid at present.

Two new water sources have been identified. One at Nimshing-drang located nine kilometres away from Kanglung and the other at Shingche Goenpa, which is around three kilometers away.

The works began in October last year and is expected to be complete by mid of next year.

The local residents, colleges, schools and offices in Kanglung Gewog would receive sufficient water supply once the new water supply system is complete.

The gewog office plans to implement a meter-reading system to ensure people do not waste water.
