The government of the day will decide the fate of the Motor Vehicles Agreement for Regulation of Passenger, Personal and Cargo Vehicular Traffic between Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal (BBIN MVA) after doing a thorough research.
Prime Minister Dr. Lotay Tshering shared this following a question by one of the reporters gathered at Media Meet session on Friday.
“This agreement requires a lot of brainstorming and discussion. We cannot blindly go ahead with the agreement,” adds the Prime Minister.
The previous government dropped the idea of ratifying the agreement after the Opposition Party and the National Council expressed strong reservations about it.
The opposition and the council strongly felt that the government did not consult majority of the stakeholders.
They said no study was carried out to determine the impact of the agreement on the country’s culture, environment, national security, politics and economy.
The erstwhile government, however, gave green signal to implement BBIN MVA in the three other member countries (Bangladesh, India and Nepal) in April 2017.
“The decision was made to facilitate early implementation of the agreement since these three countries have already ratified it,” stated the news release from the foreign ministry, issued on 27 April, 2017.
