Sawmills in Haa donates Nu 25,000 each to the dzongkhag administration yearly, which is used for different purposes including tree plantation and cleanup campaigns.

Haa valley is known for its lush green forest cover, but the dzongkhag also has one of the highest number of sawmills in the country.

Currently, there are 24 sawmills in the district.

“The money that sawmill owners donate is a way of giving back to nature,” Haa Dzongda Kinzang Dorji said.

The President of the Association of Wood-Based Industries, Rinchen Khandu, says it would be great if sawmills in other places could follow suit.

“We have been hoping if the initiative goes well here, other dzongkhags could adopt it,” he said.

“It will help in the conservation of our forests and environment,” he added.

The noble initiative is its third year now.
