An elephant calf that got trapped in an ongoing construction of a duct in Gelegphu town was rescued yesterday. The calf had fallen into the duct while feeding on a nearby banana tree with a herd of elephants at around four in the morning.

At the dawn, the residents, police, forestry and thromde officials’ came together to rescue the elephant calf.

While the rest of the elephants had fled, the calf’s mother remained, chasing off people who tried to come near them.

Residents were finally able to scare off the mother with the help of an excavator and after dismantling the duct they pulled out the elephant calf.

They then took the calf towards its mother, and the reunited pair went off into the forest.
