Reality shows are becoming a lucrative business. The number of people hosting reality shows has been increasing year by year. However, most of the organisers say the business is not going to last in the long run.

The first reality show was started in the country by Nidup Dorji in 2008. The show was called Bhutan Star. It is a show where it entertains people and at the same time organisers make money through SMS voting.

According to Nidup Dorji though the show did not go well initially as expected, it picked up the next year. He said the business has been good. “To be honest we make profit but we need to divide the money among Bhutan Telecom and BBS. There are sponsors too but I must say we have to spend expenditure for so many purposes from our own pocket. I must say it is more like no profit no loss.”

“As compared to last year’s show, this year it is better,” said Mila Tobgay, Talent Hunt Organiser.

However, most of the organisers are worried due to the increasing number of reality shows organised every year.“Since there are so many reality shows in the country I am already concerned about how it might work in the future. When the number of shows increases then gradually the quality will decrease and it will be difficult to get sponsors too. So I think it will it will not be a good business in the future,” said Nidup Dorji.

Mila Tobgay shares the same feeling.

The show permits are issued by the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority, BICMA. So far they have issued more than eight permits.
