Paro Police probing WhatsApp scam case

Police in Paro are investigating the WhatsApp scam case which has tricked several Bhutanese to send money to scammers in Jaigoan, West Bengal.

A man in Paro using WhatsApp received a message saying he had won Rs. 2.5m and a BMW vehicle in a lucky draw.

The man according to Police was told to deposit Nu 10,000 as pincode charge and did so. However, when he was asked to deposit additional Nu 25,000 as a prize tax, the victim lodged a complaint with the police.

Police say 13 other Bhutanese have fallen victim to the scam. But the numbers could more. Police investigators said there are seven Bhutanese individuals, who are assisting by providing their bank account numbers to the Indian scammer.

They confirmed that only one of them had handed over a cash of Nu 500,000 to a money exchanger in Jaigoan.

Police, so far, have arrested two Indians and three Bhutanese for their alleged involvement in the scam. They have frozen all seven accounts and seized around Nu 200,000.

Despite advisory notices by police, Bhutanese are still found depositing the money in those accounts, said the officials.
