Gasa Dzong renovation inches closer to completion

The Gasa Tashi Thongmoen Dzong is set to stand on its former glory come June this year. The restoration works started in August 2014 and four years on, more than 80 per cent of it is complete.

Today, works are in full swing to complete the dzongkhag’s administrative offices, residence of the Lam Neten and main courtyard. Around 130 Bhutanese nationals are working to restore the 17th century fortress.

“There is nothing to be worried about because all those wood works that need to be done are all ready. What we are waiting for is the mud and the stone work, which will be completed in about month’s time,” said Gasa Dzongdag, Dorji Dhradhul.

The Utse, which houses the Goen Khang of Ap Gomo, the protecting deity of Gasa, was inaugurated by His Majesty in December last year, as part of the 25 years celebration of Gasa Dzongkhag.

The governments of Bhutan and India are jointly funding the project worth Nu 166m.
