Hundreds witness Punakha Tshechu

The annual Punakha Tshechu is underway. Locals and tourists alike thronged the dzong courtyard yesterday and today to witness the festival.

The festival is being presided over by the Dorji Lopen of the Zhung Dratshang or the Central Monastic Body.

The three-day tshechu festival is preceded by the annual Punakha domchoe, which is also a three-day long festival.

Punakha tshechu is fairly new. It was instituted in 2005. Before that, there was only the Domchoe festival, which features various sacred mask dances with most of them performed in the Dukhang.

The tshechu festival, which began yesterday, ends tomorrow.
