JNEC students, faculty pitch business ideas for National Startup Weekend

The students and faculty of Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) in Samdrup Jongkhar kicked off the week by pitching 77 different business ideas in the run-up to National Startup Weekend.

From developing mobile apps to energy harvesting methods, 20 best ideas were selected during the day-long event held on Monday. The participants were given a minute each to pitch their business ideas.

The information and communications ministry organised the event to promote start-ups and innovation.

The Chief of the Promotion Division of DITT, Chencho, said it is to provide a platform for aspiring youth, students and entrepreneurs. “Students who have creative and innovative ideas, they require a place to materialize their ideas, so the startup weekend is that place where they can bring up crazy and innovative ideas.”

Participants see it as a platform to explore alternative sources of employment. “It is a huge platform to showcase our business ideas,” Nirpa Raj Dangal said.

“Jobs are scarce these days, so I see it as a step towards becoming an entrepreneur.”

“Unemployment is growing, so such programs are an opportunity to explore possibilities for self employment,” Kalyan Kumar Chauwan, another student said.

The business idea pitching event will also be held in six other colleges in the country. From each college, 15 to 20 best business ideas will be selected for the National Startup Weekend, which will take place next month.
